Week four, term 1 2013 came about quickly and the tamariki were KEEN as to venture inland and explore an exciting new environment....Waikaremoana, lakes and native bush. As we packed up the last of our bags and kai into our vehicles and yellow bus, we had one final roll check before hitting the road. We left the YMCA and immediately our learning journey began. We paddled on the Wairoa river in a double-hole waka, explored lake Wherowhero on kayaks and by swimming. Some of us conquered the confidence course at Camp Kaitawa, a small group trekked up the great Panekire Bluff while the rest traipsed around Lake Kaitawa. We skimmed across Lake Waikaremoana in a flash boat, scampered through the Onepoto caves, trooped up the pipelines of the Kaitawa power station, visited Koka Mary's marae Te Kuha, tramped to Lake Waikareiti then glided across it's surface in row boats. We were visited by Koka Jane from the Department of Conservation and a roopu from The Lake Waikaremoana Hapu Restoration Trust, Matua Ray, Matua Rick and several other Matua too! We also worked together in groups, tukana-teina, built new relationships and enjoyed having responsibilities. Wheeeeeew....we were so busy but it was all so neat. We would like to send another big MIHI out to ALL the whanau who came along on our trip and helped out. Also to Koka Maree for keeping our pukus well nourished and very satisfied. You all helped make this fabulous learning experience possible.
